How to convert a file on this PC

Right-click a file already on this PC
Start with one file you can recognize. A picture. A clip. A document you already opened once. Confirm Explorer shows that file. Then convert. A first run that has never finished one good file is a bad place to dump a whole folder.
Right-click is the usual path. On Windows 11 the first menu is short. If File Converter is missing there, open Show more options, then look again. We will not invent extra menu names. If you cannot see the file, you are in the wrong folder. Browse to where you actually saved it.
A file on a network share is still a file. Wait until the share is available. A file on a USB stick needs the stick plugged in. Ejecting the stick while the app is writing can fail the output. Copy it to Documents if you need it after the stick leaves.
You can select more than one file if the menu still offers convert. Finish one file first. Open the output. If that output looks like the job you wanted, then select a small group.
Pick an output type

The project can convert and compress. If the menu offers compress, that is still this program. Pick the control you actually want. Compress is not a reason to fetch a second installer.
Set the destination the app offers if you want the new file somewhere you can find. If you skip that, the app may write next to the source. Either way, note the path. Converting does not replace the original unless you overwrite it on purpose. Keep the original until you like the new one.
Check the new file
Open the new file in a viewer or player you already have. Confirm it plays, or shows, or opens. If the type is wrong, convert again from the original. Do not keep editing a broken first save as if the source will fix itself.
We will not invent a quality slider. You have two files. You look at both. That is the test. If the new file is empty, the convert failed. Read any message the app showed. Try one file. Then try the next.
The original stays unless you overwrote it. The converter writes. It does not empty your Documents folder. If you copy the new file somewhere else, that is your copy. We will not invent a cloud for this project.
First run
After install, right-click one file you trust before you hunt a website named converter. Confirm the menu appears. Pick one output type. Confirm a new file appears. If the menu is missing, you have not installed yet, or you are looking at the short Windows 11 menu, or the path failed.
Windows may show a SmartScreen prompt on a first msi. Read the publisher. Prefer GitHub Releases. Winget skips some of that path because Microsoft already listed the package. If winget is missing, the msi is still honest. Do not fetch a second setup from search.
Updates live on GitHub Releases and on winget when the package updates. We do not invent a newer number than V2.2 here. Read the release. Usual Windows pick is still FileConverter-2.2-x64-setup.msi.
When the file will not convert
A zero-byte file will not convert. Download it again from the place you got it. A file still named .tmp is not finished. Wait until the name is a real type.
A file that is actually a different type renamed to look like the one you wanted will confuse you. Look at the real type. Convert from a file the menu accepts. If the menu offers no output, that source is not a job for this hour.
If the app reports the file is damaged, try a second copy of the same file if you have one. This page will not repair bytes. It will not host a recovery tool. If the copy in email still opens on another machine, save a fresh copy here.
If write fails, the disk may be full, or the path may be on a stick you already pulled. Save again to a local folder. Then copy.
School PCs, labs, and uninstall
A lab image may block winget and unknown installers. Then this convert is closed for that hour. Do not fetch a wrapper to get around policy. Use a program already on the image, or wait until you control the PC.
A borrowed laptop you return in twenty minutes is a bad place to leave FileConverter-2.2-x64-setup.msi. Use what is already on the machine, or do not install.
